“Who’s Looney Now?” Chaloner Succeeds in Turning Hair Dark on Gazing at Wood

John Armstrong Chaloner, author of the famous phrase, “Who’s looney now?” was satisfied today that he had successfully demonstrated how to turn gray hair into brown. Chaloner came to New York from his home in Virginia especially to demonstrate his discovery. This consists of gazing intently into a piece of black walnut while vigorously brushing the hair. He said he has been doing it for 15 years and that his hair remains brown for several hours after each treatment.
Here’s how he explains it: The color of the wood enters the eyes and penetrates the skull and the roots of the hair, which becomes after a quarter of an hour of the treatment a dark brown.
Chaloner gained wide publicity when after escaping from New York, where he had been adjudged insane, he sent a telegram reading “Who’s looney now?” to his brother Bob Chainer upon the latter’s marriage to Lina Cavalieri, opera singer. Chaloner later was declared sane.
