More cataloging finds--July 20th to 25th

From Publisher’s Weekly, July 10, 2006:
Nearly 20% of all romance novels sold in 2005 had paranormal story lines.

From The Judiciary and Sexual Assault prepared by the Minnesota District Judges Association annual meeting, June 20, 1978:
Ten times more girls are molested than boys.
Median age of sexually abused child is 11 years old.
97% of child molesters are male.
10% of assaults against the child involved more than one offender.
75% of the offenders were known to the child or the family.
27% lived in the child’s home.
11% didn’t live with the child but were related.

Girls between the ages of 15 and 19 accounted for 1/4th of all reported victims [of sexual assault].
61% of arrested rapists [from this particular study] were under 25 years of age. Eighteen year olds commit the greatest number of rapes.
Men who rape in prison are usually there for crimes of violence: robbery, assault, and heterosexual rape.
The average age of a prison rapist [from this particular study] was 23 years old. The average victim was 21 years old.
The highest risk hours for sexual assault are 8 pm to 2 am; the peak day is Saturday.
Although rape occurs all year round, the months of July, August and September account for a higher frequency of the offense, especially in cold weather areas.

(I couldn’t find conviction statistics about rape, but did find that over 90% of child sex abuse cases presented do not go to trial. Over half are not charged or dropped after charging. From National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse, 1996. Using similar percentages, of the 2240 forcible rapes in Minnesota in 2000, about 125 of those were prosecuted.)
