Life goes on...
Since we moved:
Squeak has quickly grown bored with our one level, smaller apartment. He grows mewly and tries to run out the door. His two joys are sleeping on the office chair and sitting on the high windowsills, although traffic freaks him out.
I joined my first book club and we went to the county library to look for a copy of Wicked: The life and times of the wicked witch of the west. Its a popular book and at my old job, we probably had 30 or 40 copies in the system. Here, they had only four copies (like most normal libraries that arent trying to be bookstores) and 28 people in line already. I nearly fell over in shock. It was so different. There was a clear divide between reference staff and circulation, the building was smaller and darker, and the workers dressed in jeans and flannel. They only had a few copies of the best sellers, didn't seem to weed and used the Library of Congress instead of Dewey Decimal. However, they had things we never did. While we stood at the desk signing up for cards, we spied one of their dvds for loan. Oz! That would be the day that my old library would have any adult dvds for circulaion, let alone Oz or the Sopranos. They also had current indie rock cds and a big bin of zines!! Wow!!
My folks came to visit this weekend. Despite ongoing plumbing issues in the apartment, we had fun. We visited the outdoor farmer's market, drove around the lakes and downtown, watched a movie, went to a great liquor store with free beer and wine samples and had a couple drinks at Nye's Polonaise room, one of my favorite places in Minneapolis. At their website, www.nyespolonaise.com, you can read: "POLISH & AMERICAN CUISINE Welcome to Nye's Polonaise Room, a one-of-a-kind Minneapolis treasure that has charmed and entertained people since 1949. It's a place where live polka music moves people to dance. Where you can sing your favorite lounge tunes, everything from Patsy Cline to Dean Martin with piano singer Lou Snider. Enjoy authentic Polish food from a menu that also features all the supper club favorites such as Nye's Famous Prime Rib and Jumbo Lobster Tail."
One half of the bar/restaurant holds a lounge/piano bar and the other has "the world's most dangerous polka band." It makes me so happy to sit in a room of strangers, all of us drinking and singing "Walking after midnight" or singing "In Heaven there is no Beer." Needless to say, my parents loved it.
We've had dinner with Jeremy's mom a bunch and it's been great to see her so often. (And for the occasional free load of laundry.)
The car's clinging to life, although it's list of woes and needed repairs keeps growing. No money to pay for the though....
Fall is here and the nights are chilly. Life is pretty good. I got a new post office box. Email me if you want the address.
More soon, y'all.
